چکیده

The present paper studies a particular collection of classi cation problems, i.e., the classi cation of recursive predicates and languages, for arriving at a deeper understanding of what classi cation really is. In particular, the classi cation of predicates and languages is compared with the classi cation of arbitrary recursive functions and with their learnability. The investigation undertaken is re ned by introducing classi cation within a resource bound resulting in a new hierarchy. Furthermore, a formalization of multi{classi cation is presented and completely characterized in terms of standard classi cation. Additionally, consistent classi cation is introduced and compared with both resource bounded classi cation and standard classi cation. Finally, the classi cation of families of languages that have attracted attention in learning theory is studied, too. A preliminary version of this paper appeared at the rst European Workshop on Computational Learning Theory

Classifying Recursive Predicates and Languages

We study the classi cation of recursive predicates and languages. In particular, we compare the classi cation of predicates and languages with the classi cation of arbitrary recursive functions and with learning. Moreover, we re ne our investigations by introducing classi cation with a bounded number of mind changes and establish a new hierarchy. Furthermore, we introduce multi{classi cation an...

The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...

Split complex predicates in Persian

Complex predicates, or compound verbs, constitute a major portion of verbal forms in the Persian language. They are normally formed using a noun, adjective, preposition, or prepositional phrase, followed by a light verb. Unlike many other languages that employ such constructions, Persian allows the two components to become separated. This paper will investigate where complex predicates syntacti...

A Reexamination of the Cross-linguistic Parameterization of Causative Predicates: Japanese perspectives

1. Introduction In this paper, I will examine the syntax and semantics of one subtype of Japanese morphological causative in comparison to other kinds of morphological causatives in Japanese and similar causatives in other languages. I will point out that this subtype does not exhibit biclausal properties typical of more familiar Japanese causative predicates. The observations are discussed in ...
